Hats off to the Homeless.

In their continued effort to find creative ways to educate and inspire kids, the Creativity Shell Rochester is inviting Kids to their studio at 1984 Monroe Avenue to help make hats for the homeless!

The Creativity Shell Rochester is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization on a mission to use creative trades to educate and inspire the next generation of makers. The organization teaches sewing/textile arts and other trades classes to students in public libraries, schools and shelters that rescue children from homelessness and human trafficking. Their programs are designed to educate and inspire children by teaching them essential life and practical skills.

The Creativity Shell Rochester hopes to make and distribute 300 new hats before Christmas to the homeless population as well as refuges who may be experiencing their first Rochester Winter. “Hats are a great item for kids to learn to make” Says Janet Lipp, studio Manager at the Creativity Shell. “The idea of giving them away to people in need is the most essential lesson for the kids.” added Christalyn Duff, an instructor at the Creativity Shell Rochester.

Workshops will be held at selected times from December 19 -23. Parents are asked to sign up their kids for a “Hats off to the Homeless” workshop online at https://www.creativityshellroc.org.  Registration is required so the staff can prepare enough supplies and have machines available for students to work on.

During a 1-hour workshop, students can make as many hats as possible.  The Creativity Shell is asking for a $10 donation/student to help pay for the cost of fabrics, supplies and to help pay for the cost of the Creativity Shell outreach program that will teach Free sewing classes in homeless and refugee shelters in 2018.

When asked if adults are allowed to participate in this fun and philanthropic mission to make hats for the homeless, “Absolutely!” says Lipp. “The more hands we have on machines, the more hats we can make.”
