Kingwood Library embraces Creativity Shell!

Kingwood Library embraces “Creativity Shell,” teaches kids to sew and serves as model for Houston libraries!

Kingwood, TX – In their continuing efforts to provide innovative programs for students, the Kingwood Public Library has partnered with the non-profit organization the “Creativity Shell” to launch a textile arts program for kids!

An idea that is usually geared for professional quilting clubs or fashion design schools; textile programs are designed to help adult artists perfect their craft (and their stitch!) Kim Dyer from the Kingwood Public Library and Shelancia Daniel from the Creativity Shell found the library to be a perfect place to combine the kids at the library in afterschool programs with an opportunity to learn something creative.

“I think this will be an excellent opportunity to help us fulfill our mission to use creative trades to educate and inspire kids.” Said Daniel.  “I’m looking forward to it!” added Dyer.

At the Creativity Shell, student library users will participate in sewing classes, fashion design and many other textile arts such as fabric dyeing and screen-printing. These programs are designed to teach children to design clothing, manufacture their own items and be inspired by their own creativity. As the program develops, students will also benefit from a range of textile experts who will teach special workshops to help pass on their creative trades to the next generation.

The Creativity Shell textile program will open to middle school students at the Kingwood Library on Wednesday evenings from 4:30PM – 5:30PM starting January 6, 2016. Students participating in the Creativity Shell program will also be invited to showcase their work at the organizations annual fashion show in May 2016.
